The songs on Awake are so good that they only range from
great to holy Moses that song was freakin’ unbelievable. Every single track on the album is
great. Awake is far better than anything
Metallica ever put out. The musicianship
is phenomenal. The production is
superb. Realistically, I have tried to
think of some constructive criticisms for this album, but I fail. It just simply doesn’t get any better than
this.
Every musician is playing a well crafted piece of
music. If you a guitarist, then you will
be blown away by John. If you are a
vocalist you will be blow away by James.
If you a drummer you will be blown away by Mike Portnoy, and so on…
I have all of Dream Theater’s albums, and this is definitely
one of their personal best, and Dream Theater is already among the best at
making music today. My other favorites
in the Dream Theater catalog are Octavarium, Score, Systematic Chaos, and A
Dramatic Turn of Events.
Awake was actually my first ever Dream Theater
purchase. Prior to this I had only heard
Pull Me Under on the radio in the wee hours of the morning on a radio show that
specialized in metal. The show was on so
late that when I was a kid, I used to wait for it to come on, pop a cassette
tape in my boom box and record the show for later listening. I liked that song, so when I got to college,
and someone was like, “Hey! Dream
Theater is a really good progressive metal band, you should check them out,”
and I was like hmmm, I remember that song, “Pull Me Under,” I heard on the
radio, so I rushed out and bought Awake.
Getting into Dream Theater has literally changed my life because I have
spend so much time listening to their songs.
In my opinion, the songs on Awake are better than Pull Me
Under, and they outdid their first major label
effort, “Images and Words.” Pull
Me Under Sounds like Metallica with a different vocalist to me.
